About Clayton

Clayton County, Georgia, was established on November 30, 1858, and named after Augustin S. Clayton, a prominent jurist and former U.S. Congressman. Located just south of Atlanta, the county originally thrived as an agricultural region, with cotton plantations playing a significant role in its early economy.

During the Civil War, Clayton County saw considerable action, particularly during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. The Battle of Jonesboro, which took place in Clayton County, was a decisive engagement that led to the fall of Atlanta and significantly contributed to the eventual Union victory. The war left the county's infrastructure heavily damaged, but the community gradually rebuilt in the ensuing years.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of railroads and industry in Clayton County. The establishment of the Central of Georgia Railway and other lines facilitated transportation and commerce, fostering economic growth. The county seat, Jonesboro, became a vital railroad hub and a center of commerce.

Post-World War II, Clayton County experienced significant suburbanization. The construction of the Atlanta International Airport (now Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport) in the late 20th century further accelerated this growth, bringing economic opportunities and transforming the county into a bustling suburban area. The airport, partly located in Clayton County, is one of the busiest in the world, contributing to the county's economic landscape.

In recent decades, Clayton County has seen substantial demographic changes, becoming one of Georgia's most ethnically diverse counties. This diversity is reflected in the county's culture, businesses, and institutions. Despite facing challenges such as economic fluctuations and educational hurdles, Clayton County continues to evolve, focusing on community development and infrastructure improvements.

Today, Clayton County is known for its historical significance, vibrant community, and strategic location near Atlanta. It remains an important part of the metropolitan Atlanta area, contributing to the region's cultural and economic vitality.
